Before I noted that, since it had been recommended by the Intel driver utility, I did download and install it based on seeing this from the Intel Driver Update Utility. The driver you’re trying to install probably is incompatible with the device. Wireless adapter drivers: Install these drivers if you want the Microsoft* operating system to manage the wireless client. When you update the Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software package, the driver version for your wireless adapter may not be updated.

From what I read the Small Tree drivers verify if the Intel card is a 'Small Tree Intel card'.
This is most likely done using the subsystem-id and subsystem-vendor-id in the PCI configuration space, something which can now be spoof using FakePCIID.
