Hello there.
I have this annoying problem with my Desktop Pc , which is that the CD-ROM case ray that opens doesn't open well. the problem exactly is that after i got it in like 1 - 2 years , whenever i want to open the cd case ray it simply doesn't open . like it does make those sounds that it will open , and that light appears at the case , but still does not open. when i did kept pressing that button for it to open several time . after several tapping on the button to open it finally does . but when happened to me today is that the driver it self stopped working , which means that i can still open it after many tries but when i insert any cd or whatever it does not show up . in addition when i go ' my computer ' the CD-RW drive is not shown. so i went to the device manager and saw that below the 'DVD /CD-ROM drivers ' the driver for it ' ATAPI DVD A DH16A1L ' that has an exclamation mark. so it means it's not working properly. so i uninstalled that driver and re-installed , hoping it would work , but still not luck. so i would really appreciate any help from you guys .

lemonguy6 hi, if you look on the side where the tray slides in and out you will see a little hole if you insert a straitened paper clip in the hole about
1 inch or a tiny bit more the tray will release and pop open, if you look under the tray when its out you will see the slide system and how it works see
that nothing is stopping it from coming out 'underneath on one side you will see a spring make sure thats not compressed , if all seams ok have a look at the driver,EDIT:if a desk top its easier to see the little hole be gentle cheak it slides in and out ok
well, i couldn't find a clip or whatever . BUT it did open normally .. and no nothing is stopping it everything seems okay . i guess it's just the ' driver's ' problem. again the driver's name : ATAPI DVD A DH16A1L.

p.s , pc name : hp compaq dx7400
try the compaq/hp site not sure of the web ad, (it wasn't a clip a tiny little hole its in case the power goes and a cd is left in by mistake:)

thanks for the response . BUT i already tried hp site and nothing over there, if you are pointing at something please tell me. the link where i can download the driver needs to pay :( , which im not willing to . so i really don't know what to do and i really need this fixed ASAP .

You can try searching the HP sites from different countries around the world. It sometimes works.
i don't get you LH . i mean i already did search the official ' HP ' website and nothing could help me for my issue .
Have you tried the web site of the mfg of your Cd-Rom? They should have XP drivers

germ-x the problem is .. i searched for the driver's name it self and no hope . like other you have to pay and most likely they scam. and the pc is hp . so no hope in hp website neither :(

as you know my pc is hp , so umm it's like from hp .. but the name of it as written is ' LightScribe ' . it's a Cd-writer too .
edit: and you got the driver's name .
have a look in device manager under dvdcd-rom , there should be a name like this EXAMPLE :philips dvdram sdvd8821h atadevice:

Most major companies have official sites in different countries round the world. They sometimes have different drivers available.

lemonguy6, ATAPI DVD A DH16A1l is the generic windows driver for a CD/DVD drive and not the original. Did your hp compaq dx7400 come with a driver disc? Firstly, you should uninstall Lightscribe to save conflicts. Lightscribe is the software that is supplied with a Lightscribe enabled drive (you can copy a grey scale pic to a Lightscribe CD/DVD.
I will search and see what drive was installed for your particular machine.

thanks mike for searching . i uninstalled old lightscribe . reinstalled the one you posted but for the cd/dvd driver link when i wanted to install it it says i cannot because the driver does not match with my machine or something like that and that it is not compatible. i even predicted that would happen because it does not have the same name as mine .

this pretty much showed me updates for my mouse , keyboard , n95 driver ( nokia cell phone ) , etc .
i was taking another look at the DVD/CD-ROM driver from the device manager . and i went to the ' ATAPI DVD A DH16A1L ' properties . then it said this in the device status ' Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19) ' .

where did you get it from ?, can you install again, post back,
exactly .. i mean the ' icon ' if the cd/dvd rom in ' My computer ' is not shown there anymore and no it does not play if i enter a cd .
when i uninstalled the driver from device manager , it auto installs when you restart the pc , because it searches for plug devices.
EDIT : and after i reinstalled still got the yellow exclamation mark and it's not working.

issue or driver :)
suggestion: disconnect the Cd-Rom and reboot your computer into safe mode. Go into device mgr and see if anything referencing your Cd-Rom delete it.
You never listed the Lightscribe model #. We are trying to help in the dark. Your computer HP Dx7400 may have different model numbers.
Your post referring to the registry issue is most likely caused by you trying things which is understandable but not knowing the results can be more harmful then the original problem.
Suggest you make a backup image of your system and make a restore point before going further, and make a new restore point before making other changes. This way you can always go back to before you made changes. You can always restore to before you made your latest change if it doesn't help.
germ-x , i had some lightscribe version , that uninstalled and reinstalled another ' updated ' version of it . current lightscribe 1.14.25.1
And btw , in LightScribe control panel , under lightscribe drivers it says ' -- no lightscribe drivers found -- '
At this point I am not worried about the software / drivers. Need to know the Model Number of your Lightscribe burner.
You might need a firmware update and new drivers but cannot do it without the model number.

You would have to remove it from the case and the model number is on the top of the burner.
Have you ever removed one or installed one?
well . let's just say i love opening stuff and especially pc . and im kinda experienced ? :P

This appears to be built for HP. If there was a name next to the model mumber it would help.

Do you have any of the HP disks that came with your PC?
In re-reading all your posts it might be your burner is ready if not already defective.
Since the tray door isn't usually a driver problem.
Windows Xp normally will pickup any an optical device when it finds it.
The hardware wizard box will automatically pop up and install the drivers.
Since this didn't happen and now you are saying it doesn't show in 'My Computer' you may have totally uninstalled the drivers that came with Windows. At this point I would suggest you find your original driver 'ATAPI DVD A DH16A1L'.
Since you have the case cover off you can unplug the power connector to the Cd- Rom drive and reboot Windows.
After Windows boots up look in devive mgr. You should not see any Cd-ROM. Shut windows off and then plug the power connector back into the socket of the drive.
Start windows back up and see if the Wizard box opens saying it found new hardware. If it does then it might find the driver itself or you may need to install the driver.
Since this Cd-Rom came with this computer and you have the original XP installed you really don't need to update any drivers since you have not made any hardware upgrades.
When you saw that yellow warning in device mgr it means that device is not functioning. It could be the device, the drivers and or any software if needed.
When you get the drivers reinstalled go to device mgr and click on the device and select properties. What does it say?
ok well first of all , as i said when ever i uninstall that driver ATAPI DVD A DH16A1L from device manager it auto installs when i reboot . so i have it now but still with the yellow exclamation mark. so i want to know shall i install the driver in the link you posted ?
OR shall i follow the steps in opening the case and unplugging etc . EDIT : no i dont have any of the disks .

ANOTHER EDIT : although i was waiting for your response . i then tried to install that update for the burner . it did not work because it said , it does not meet the requirements .. and i think it's not working because it starts with ' PBDS ' DH-16A1L and not ' ATAP ' DH-16A1L .
okay germ-x .. i did all what you said about the unplugging the wires from the burner and open the pc and then again shut down then plug them . but after all this still it's still not working . i still get the yellow exclamation mark and it says the same thing in properties . so i really dont know what to do here .
Do you have another computer you can install this drive on for testing?
When you start your computer up does the light on the front of your Cd-Rom blink a few times while posting?
When your post screen comes on ( the black & white screen with all system information ) before windows starts. Does this lightscribe show?
no the light does not show on the cd-rom when i turn it on . and also no the light scribe does not show .. but i think it's in task manager ' LSSrvc.exe '.
So i guess it's a hopeless case. :(

ya i tried this before , and i also said to try it again cuz as u said i got nothing to loose , but still no hope . what happened like it did detect the problem from the driver then it uninstalled it and reinstalled but then at the task bar it says ' A problem has occurred while trying to install the device. the device might not work properly. ' so yeah still nothing new .
Do you have your original recovery / backup disks you received when you purchased your computer?
new dvdcd rom drive!! best way to go only £20-30 at least you will know then its NOT the drive!! ( its now a processes of elimination) i can't think of nothing else it can be ? :)
@mark, I was going to suggest he do a clean install to verify what is bad but since no disks a new drive is best bet.
@lemonguy6, Even if you don't have the correct driver the old one should have still been on your hdd from your / or HP's original install. Windows should have been able to find and reinstall.
well . im kinda of 100 percent sure it's the driver problem .. but meh.
it did find and reinstall . but while installing . an error Occurs !
suggest you contact HP ( email) and give then the model & serial number of your computer and the model & serial number of your Cd drive and ask them to supply you with a new driver. You will also have to provide what O/S you are running so they can supply the correct one.
